We extend condolences and prayers to the family, friends, and loved ones of Symeon Williams, Sr., the fire cadet who tragically passed away in May 2025. The loss of a young life dedicated to public service is a tragedy for our entire city.
The allegations of racist hazing are disturbing. We demand a full, transparent investigation. Cleveland City Council will work closely with the Mayor, Safety Department and Law Department to learn the exact details of the circumstances leading to this tragedy.
If it is determined that hazing or discriminatory abuse occurred within our training academy, this Council will demand that those responsible be held accountable. We will review current legislation and explore new legislation to prevent harassment, hazing, or unprofessional treatment in our academies, and for any employees during their probationary period with the city of Cleveland and beyond.
