Councilwoman Stephanie Howse-Jones Praises
Frontline Development for Completing Financing for Gateway 66 Project in Hough
CLEVELAND, OHIO—Today, Cleveland City Councilwoman Stephanie Howse-Jones praised the Frontline Development Group, which closed financing on the $27.5 million Gateway 66 development that will be constructed in Hough on a 1.6-acre vacant lot at the intersection of E. 66th Street and Linwood Avenue across from League Park
Last week, the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority approved a capital lease and the issuance of $25 million in taxable lease revenue bonds, providing the last piece of the financial puzzle for the project to move forward. Frontline expects to break ground on the project next month.
“Projects like Gateway 66 are a part of our collective efforts to attract people back to our community,” Howse-Jones said. “I want to thank Frontline Development Group for their years of perseverance to get this project fully funded.”
Frontline Development Group is a black- and women-owned housing developer from Cleveland. Woda Cooper Cos. is a Columbus-based company that specializes in affordable housing. Frontline is the lead developer and majority owner of the Gateway 66 project.
Howse-Jones also lauded the investors in the projects, including the Port of Cleveland, the City of Cleveland, and University Hospitals, which provided the project with a $3 million low-interest loan.
Gateway 66 involves more than 82,000 square feet of new construction and will have 80 units spread over two four-story elevator buildings. Of these 80 units, 56 will have a single bedroom, and 24 will have two bedrooms. Only four of Gateway 66’s units will have market-rate rents. The other 76 units will be available to people with incomes at or below 80% of the Area Median Gross Income.
“Cleveland has an affordability problem, where working people can’t find quality affordable housing,” Councilwoman Howse-Jones said. “There’s enormous unmet demand. When Gordon Crossing recently opened, we had more than 1,300 people apply to rent 54 units.”
Howse-Jones also pointed out that, in addition to being across from League Park, Gateway 66 is near major employers like University Hospitals, the Cleveland Clinic, the Midtown Tech Corridor, the Fatima Family Center, and Dave’s Market.
“Hough needs quality affordable housing that supports neighborhood growth. Gateway 66 is a crucial piece to continuing our Ward 8 efforts to demonstrate that Cleveland is the right place to call home.”
