Councilmembers Santana and Polensek Release Statements in Response to Weekend Gun Violence
Jun 01, 2026
CLEVELAND, OHIO—Today, Cleveland City Councilmembers Jasmin Santana and Mike Polensek issued statements in response to gun violence that occurred in the city during the weekend of May 30–31.
Ward 14 Councilwoman Jasmin Santana:
“During my eight-and-a-half years as a Councilwoman, this last weekend was one of the most shocking and frightening I’ve experienced. Three people were killed, and another three people were injured by gun violence in my ward.
The holes left in the lives of families and friends of those killed can’t be filled, and those who were injured face a long road of healing and recovery. I offer my care and support to all those suffering this heartbreak.
Every act of violence leaves a scar on our community. Survivors, families, friends, and neighbors are forced to live with the deep trauma these incidents create.
Keeping our city safe is our shared responsibility. We are actively working with our community partners, the Cleveland Division of Police, violence prevention organizations, residents, and stakeholders to address crime and improve public safety.”
Councilwoman Santana urged everyone to participate in her Gun Violence Listening Tour, which begins later this week. Participants will be asked to share their experiences and concerns and to help connect communities and partners in creating long-term public safety solutions.”

Chair of City Council’s Safety Committee Mike Polensek:
“It’s become very clear to all members of Cleveland City Council that there is a growing concern about the increased level of violence as we approach the official start of summer. It’s also clear we need more police officers on Cleveland’s streets.
I once again call upon Mayor Bibb, the Safety Director, and the Chief of Police to request that Governor DeWine deploy the Ohio Highway Patrol to support the Cleveland Division of Police’s efforts to keep our neighborhoods safe.”
