About Tanmay Shah
Tanmay Shah proudly represents Ward 12 on Cleveland City Council, which includes portions of the Edgewater, Cudell, West Boulevard, and the Jefferson neighborhoods.
Councilman Shah is a lawyer and community organizer. He is the first Jain, (an Indian religion teaching a path to spiritual purity and enlightenment through disciplined nonviolence to all living creatures) and the first Indian immigrant to serve on Council. Elected in November 2025 to a four-year term, he has identified affordable housing, access to affordable groceries, and reliable city services as his top priorities.
Born in India and raised in Northeast Ohio, Councilman Shah has dedicated his career to advocating for working-class families and advancing equitable communities.
Before joining Council, he worked as a housing attorney, helped organize a union at his workplace, and spent time as a truck driver. He earned his undergraduate degree from Kent State University and his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. Outside of public service, he is an avid gardener and proud cat dad to Momo and Kiki.
