Cleveland City Council Meeting Highlights—September 21, 2026

Sep 21, 2026

On September 21, 2026, Council President Blaine Griffin convened a Cleveland City Council meeting at 7:00 pm and adjourned it around 8:40 pm.

Happy Monday and Welcome to Fall!

Can you feel the excitement? It’s amazing what refreshed branding can do for you!

We’ve been tracking the media coverage for the Gulf of Cleveland all week, and I can happily tell you the story has reached as far as India and Japan.

I haven’t asked yet, but I fully expect hotel reservations to skyrocket as people all around the world want to vacation on our newly christened Gulf! Just you watch!

After last week's hubbub over renaming water and declaring Dolly Day, with this week's Council meeting, we’re back to the nuts and bolts of local government. LOTS of nuts and bolts. And cars and trucks and parks and streets and even cemeteries. All part of the day-to-day work of municipal governance.

I’ll get to all that. But before I do, here’s something to make your day:

This summer, two Cleveland Recreation American Athletic Union basketball teams, 9th- and 10th-grade girls and 10th-grade boys, won NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. How cool is that?

Tonight, Cleveland City Council presented them with their trophies and honored them with proclamations. They rightfully received a standing ovation.

As for the rest of the meeting, you can watch it here,

The most significant thing that happened tonight (other than the basketball champs!) was Council passing 14 ordinances authorizing the issuance of bonds totaling more than $90 million. If you’d like to read them, I’ve included the links below.

For the other items on tonight’s agenda, here’s tonight’s agenda. You can also view each individual piece of Council business by going here.

Two quick things:

City Council has its first public hearing on data centers this Thursday, September 24, at 6:00 pm, at Collinwood Rec Center.

And this Friday, September 25 (9-to-5), is Dolly Parton Day in Cleveland! Check out what's going on at the Rock Hall to celebrate her life and legacy.

And, as a point of personal privilege, I’d like to congratulate my friend, former Cleveland City Council President Jay Westbrook, for re-upping for the Community Relations Board. Notice of his oath of office was communicated to Council tonight.

Talk with you next week!

Mike
